Fernando Althabe holds a degree in Medicine from Buenos Aires University, gained with honors. He works as the Director of the Mother and Child Health Research Department at the Institute of Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS), a non-profit and independent organization dedicated to reaserch in the health field. He is an associate professor at the Public Health School, of Buenos Aires University, an adjunct associate professor at the Department of Epidemiology of Tulane University (USA).
He has been trained as an obstetrician and after working fifteen years at the Obstetrics Department of the Italian Hospital in Buenos Aires, he earned a position as a perinatology researcher at the Latin American Center for Perinatology (Panamerican Health Organization, World Health Organization) from 1997 to 2004. During this period, he earned a Master in Epidemiology at London University. After the founding and coordinating the Clinical and Epidemiological Research Unit in Montevideo, from 2005 till 2006, he started working at IECS, in 2007.
His main focus is on the design and conduction of multinational and multicenter randomized researches. The aim of this is to evaluate the interventions in order to improve the health of women and children as well as the quality of health care provided to them.
