Dr. Mary J. Hamel is a medical epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Senior Malaria Advisor for the Presidents Malaria Initiative. In 1995, after completing her medical training at the University of Vermont School of Medicine, Residency in Internal Medicine at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, she joined the CDC as a Medical Epidemiologist in the International Health Program Office/Child Survival Activity. She subsequently was board certified in Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Hamel has lead and supervised numerous malaria-related studies, clinical trials and targeted evaluations focusing on prevention and treatment of malaria in children, pregnant women, and HIV infected persons, and transmission reduction efforts. She has worked in western Kenya and other African countries on malaria control and child survival projects since 1995. She served as the Malaria Branch Chief at KEMRI/CDC Research and Public Health Collaboration, posted in Kisumu, in western Kenya from 2004 to 2010. She is the Principal Investigator for KEMRI/CDC on the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine trial.
