Charles H. Brower

Based in CDDEP's New Delhi office, Charles Brower is a research analyst and Fulbright-Nehru Fellow. He received a bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University, where his senior independent work – “Modeling Bacterial Pathogen Emergence at the Human-Animal Interface” – focused on the potential of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) ST398 to emerge in human populations following repeated introductions from the animal reservoir and the public health implications of such an occurrence. Stemming from this work, his Fulbright-Nehru research fellowship delves into agricultural antimicrobial use in India by investigating which types of antimicrobial use and farming practice contribute the most to resistance emergence in the chicken broiler industry. Furthermore, this project aims to determine the prevalence of carbapenem resistance in E. coli from agricultural reservoirs. Prior to joining CDDEP, Charles interned at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY where he designed a study to investigate the underlying causes of post-operative ileus in an orthopedic hospital.
