Dr. Fekadu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia and a visiting senior Lecturer at King's College London, Institute of Psychiatry, London, United Kingdom.
Dr. Fekadu is an Ethiopian psychiatrist and epidemiologist whose research interest focuses on the epidemiology and treatment of severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. Dr. Fekadu has been involved in several national and international studies on the epidemiology of psychotic and mood disorders, including participation in complex interventions. He has experience in community case detection and working with community leaders, community health workers, and community residents. Dr. Fekadu is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the PRIME (Program for Improving Mental Health Care) health service study in the Sodo district in Ethiopia. He is also the PI of a clinical trial of minocycline for patients with schizophrenia (MINOS Trial) in Addis Ababa, and the RISE study for treatment resistant schizophrenia. He is a collaborator and co-investigator on various additional clinical trial and complex intervention studies. His related research and clinical interest is in the area of treatment resistant depression.
In addition to obtaining his MSc (Cardiff University, UK), MRCPsych (Royal College of Psychiatrists, London, UK), MD (Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia), and PhD (Umea University, Sweden), Dr. Fekadu holds a Clinical Certificate in Clinical Psychopharmacology from the British Association for Psychopharmacology and a Certificate of Completion of (Specialty) Training in General Adult Psychiatry from the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board in London, UK. Dr Fekadu is the head of the newly established clinical trial unit of Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences.
