Catherine deVries, MD, MS joined the Pediatric Urology group at the University of Utah and Primary Children's Medical Center in 2000 and is a Professor of Surgery and Public Health at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. deVries is the Director of the University of Utah Center for Global Surgery in the Department of Surgery which focuses on the academic study of the Surgical Ecosystem as well as advocacy for surgical accessibility in low resource countries and engineering and business practices for "extreme affordability".
While pediatric urology is her clinical focus, she has been intensively active in the development of sustainable global surgery since1992. She founded International Volunteers in Urology (now IVUmed) in 1994 and continues as its President. IVUmed is dedicated to urological education worldwide and focuses on training doctors and nurses in developing countries. Dr. deVries has developed urological training programs in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. She serves as a member of the Global Alliance for Elimination of Filariasis (GAELF), and on the Board of Chairmen of the Societe Internationale d’Urologie (SIU). She teaches courses in surgery and public health and in engineering innovation for the developing world at the University of Utah and at Stanford University. She has recently completed a book, Global Surgery and Public Health; A New Paradigm.
