Raul Murillo

Dr. Raul Murillo is the General Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of Colombia. Dr. Murillo got his medical degree from the University of Antioquia in Colombia where he also completed a Masters in Public Health. Dr. Murillo started out his career as a cancer researcher at the population-based cancer registry of California in 1998. He has been involved in cancer prevention and early detection initiatives as a collaborator member of the IARC screening group and as a consultant for Latin American countries and international organizations in the field of cancer prevention and control.

Dr. Murillo has more than 40 scientific publications to his credit and has participated in various projects oriented to improving cancer screening in developing countries through program evaluation, design and application of models to test cost-effectiveness of screening alternatives, and implementation of demonstrative studies. As Assistant Director for Research and Public Health at the Colombian NCI (2004-2010), Dr. Murillo led initiatives resulting in the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control through a comprehensive national regulations in Colombia on the topic.
