DCP3's Rachel Nugent Participates in Meeting of the Lancet Global Surgery Commission

DCP3 Principal Investigator Rachel Nugent joined the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery for an implementation meeting on February 9-13 at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in Bellagio, Italy.

The purpose of this meeting was to develop a plan to support implementation of the Commission’s recommendations in order to generate progress towards universal access to safe, affordable surgical and anesthesia care when needed.  The commission convened a small group of experts from around the world who have experience in generating health improvements at local, national and global levels.

The commission is co-chaired by DCP3 Essential Surgery author John Meara.  DCP3 contributor Gavin Yamey and chapter authors Stephen Bickler and Anna Dare serve as commissioners.

The commission will culminate in the publication of a 25,000 word report that will provide a tangible reference point for governments, policymakers, funding agencies, academic institutions, healthcare providers, and local communities to engage in concrete action.  The report will be published in The Lancet in April, 2015.

DCP3 Essential Surgery editors and authors have provided substantive input and support, and the combination of the commission report and DCP3's volume on Essential Surgery will provide a strong push for advocacy and implementation of needed, cost-effective, and life-saving surgery.
