Charles Holmes

Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia

Dr. Holmes is Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ), based in Lusaka, and will remain in that post in addition to joining the ID Division and CFAR as an HIV implementation science expert.

Dr. Holmes trained in internal medicine and infectious disease at Massachusetts General Hospital and subsequently joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He then went on to serve in leadership positions in the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC) for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) during both the Bush and Obama administrations (2008 – 2012), where he was founding Director of the Office of Research and Science, and later Chief Medical Officer and Deputy U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator.
